6 years into my design career I realized it wasn’t about the pixels. I remember sitting with a customer who owned a cookie store to discuss ways to generate more business. They had driven to the shop in a white van they used to make deliveries.
So there I was thinking of cookies, a van, and increasing business. I turned that van into a mobile billboard and got that customer 30 calls on the same afternoon he left the shop.
That’s when I realized design is a custom plan to work within limitations, constraints, and budgets. There was more meaning, value, and complexity to design, and I loved it.
